The story of Serena, Mother of Pearls, transports us to the unforgettably beautiful, natural wonder of Las Cruces. It is a place situated on the glorious Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortés, in the southern region of the Mexican Peninsula of Baja California. Although our heroine, Serena, an adorable young oyster, is a mythical being, her surroundings and her loving friends, as well as the prevailing peace of her home, Las Cruces, are all very real.
Serena’s amazing adventures begin well before recorded history at the foot of the Las Cruces saffron pink mountain within the warmth of her translucent blue sea. Serena finds herself surrounded by her beloved companions in her underwater paradise.

Karen Rodriguez Bremer, affectionately known as Kali, the storyteller behind Serena Mother of Pearls invites you to explore a world beyond imagination and embark on a journey that celebrates the magic of nature, the power of kindness and the beautiful realm of the heart.
Kali’s heartwarming tales are a product of her insatiable curiosity and her connection to the indigenous people of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Inspired by her historical research, love of family, and her cherished childhood memories spent along the breathtaking shores of the Gulf of California, she has woven magic into her story for children of all ages.
One of Kali’s greatest joys is to be surrounded by her beloved family. She makes her home in the picturesque village of Todos Santos on the Pacific Coast of Baja California Sur, México. It is here that she enjoys writing surrounded by the vibrant gardens and charming structures of the Boutique Hotel known as Hacienda Todos Los Santos. She often visits the beautiful landscapes of Rancho Las Cruces and La Jolla, California.
She embraces learning and change, guided by the teachings of her beloved master, Prem Rawat. She is enchanted by Baja California's spectacular land and seascapes that fuel her creative spirit.
Kali’s journey continues with her upcoming storybook. It is a tribute to the native tribes of Baja California Sur. These stories are an extension of her love of life and of nature’s beauty. She hopes that her books will be a source of inspiration and joy for all readers.

THE ARTIST
Yoriko’s artistic path is a testament to the human spirit’s resilience and the power of transformation. Born with a vision impairment, her journey has been one of inner discovery, vivid imagination, and unyielding determination. Her unique perspective of the world was evident from an early age. Despite the challenges of her vision impairment, she found solace in the kaleidoscope of colors and opalescent light that graced her inner vision.
Encouraged by her parents, she turned to painting as a means of self-expression, allowing her love for color and intuition to guide her.
In 2007, fate brought Yoriko and Kali together, igniting the spark for what would become Serena, Mother of Pearls. As Yoriko’s art flourished, Serena’s evolution mirrored her own inner growth. With Kali’s unwavering support, she embarked on the journey of illustrating Serena’s story, and their collaboration was a source of mutual inspiration. From the delicate baby Serena drawings to monumental life-sized paintings, her work brought Serena’s narrative to life in vivid detail.
